Flax Seed Inhibits Breast Tumors

Breast cancer affects as many as 1 in 7 women in America, and kills over 50,000 every year. In the UK, 1 in 9 women develop breast cancer and over 13,000 die every year. So any way of reducing these appalling death figures would be a welcome boon for women and health authorities around the world.

<Amazingly, a simple supplement available from most health food shops could be the welcome blessing for women at risk from or who have developed breast cancer. That simple supplement is flaxseed or flaxseed oil. In fact, flaxseed may complement breast-cancer drugs without any side-effects! Dr. Paul Goss, director of the breast cancer prevention program at the Princess Margaret Hospital, and the University Health Network and associate professor at the University of Toronto, headed a study into effects of flaxseed on postmenopausal women with breast cancer.

Thirty nine women with recently diagnosed breast cancer and awaiting surgery were studied. The women were given either a muffin that contained 25 grams of ground flaxseed, or a plain (placebo) muffin that contained no flaxseed. The study was conducted over a 39-day period.

After the study, all breast-cancer tumours were removed from the women and analysed. It was found that the growth of tumours from the women who had been eating the flaxseed muffins was significantly reduced compared to the women eating the plain muffins. This is the first time it has been proved in humans that flaxseed can significantly restrict the growth of breast tumours!

The suspected reason why flaxseed was found to be so effective against breast cancer tumors is because it contains a significant amount of a compound called lignan. Lignan is known to regulate estrogen levels. High levels of estrogen have been linked to breast, uterus and cervical cancer.

Poor Diet Can Lead to Bad Behavior

A study concluded in 2004 suggests that children fed a poor diet are more likely to be irritable, swear, argue, and generally develop an anti-social attitude.

Professor Adrian Raine from the University of Southern California (USC) co-authored a study based on the development of more than 1000 children from Mauritius, an island in the Indian Ocean just off the coast of South Africa.

The researchers analysed data over a 14-year-plus period which included factors such as social background, education and health, and they concluded that the more under-nourished the children, the greater the risk of anti-social behavior in later years.

Professor Raine also pointed out that parents could help prevent their children developing anti-social and aggressive bevavior by ensuring they receive a nutritional diet.

But not all experts agree with the finding in this study, with some suggesting that genetics and poor parenting play a greater role in bad behaviour than diet. But there’s no doubt that diet can certainly play a role.

The study was published in the American Journal of Psychiatry.

Eating Meat Reduces Hunger Pains

The exact reason why diets like Atkins (high protein) promote weight loss is not well understood. But there are many anecdotal stories to support the idea that eating plenty of meat can result in losing weight.

Previous research has suggested there is link between significant protein consumption and reduced hunger pains. Indeed, Gilles Mithieux of Lyon University in France, head researcher of a new study, states that, “It is well known that protein feeding decreases hunger sensation and subsequent food intake in animals and humans.”

Researchers from the French research body INSERM, made the surprising discovery that diets high in protein spark glucose production in the small intestine. The study involving rats, demonstrated that significant protein consumption increased gene activity that leads to greater glucose production in the animals’ intestines.

The extra glucose was detected by the liver glucose-sensor which, in turn, triggered parts of the brain that reduced hunger pains and hence food intake. The underlying reasons why protein triggers glucose production still remains unknown, but researchers suspect that eating meat activates a chemical inside intestinal cells which prompts specific genes to produce glucose.

This research supports the idea that adding quality protein to your diet may help you lose weight. The study is published in Cell Metabolism, Vol. 2; Issue: 5; November 5, pages 321-329. DOI 0.1016/j.cmet.2005.09.010

What are Heartburn and Acid Reflux?

The feeling of heartburn (also called pyrosis) is caused by acid burning the lower part of the gullet (through which food passes from the mouth to the stomach). The pain can be felt in the chest and often radiates to up to the neck.

The lower esophageal sphincter (LES) separates the gullet from the stomach and normally relaxes to allow to food to enter the stomach. If the sphincter relaxes for some other reason, the contents of the stomach including the gastric acid can enter the gullet. This is know as reflux and may eventually turn into gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD).

Foods know to aggravate or cause heartburn/acid reflux include:

Spicy and fatty foods

Citrus fruits

Chocolate and sugar-based products

Tea, coffee and alcohol

Low Carb Diet Good for Your Heart?

You've probably read many things about dieting and disease, but there is some evidence that a low carbohydrate may be good for your heart... here's Dr Atkins personal view from his book: New Diet Revolution!

One of the reasons this book is being written is that I have interviewed hundreds of my old, previously successful patients, and, although most are prospering healthwise, a certain percentage of them are now overweight, not in the best condition, and, although still aware of the need to diet, are no ionger using the low-carbohydrate diet they did so well on.

Since recidivism is not a problem one often has to deal with once a person has made a low-carbohydrate lifetime commitment, I went into great detail to find out why they weren't using the Metabolic Advantage techniques I'd taught them.

I asked, "Was the Atkins diet experience a bad one?" Not in the least," they would answer, "best diet I've ever been on."
"Did you like the food?"
"Can't recall a diet where I ate so luxuriously."
"Well, how did you feel on the diet?"
"You know, now that you ask, that was the best I've felt in my adult life."

I then proceeded to review the old medical records and noted that their lab. values improved considerably on the regimen, as they usually do. Whereupon, I inquired: "OK, then explain to me why you don't eat that way today?"

Then the inevitable answer: "I heard (or read) that the diet isn't good for you."

Think of it! A large group of individuals absolutely turning their backs on common sense, defeating themselves by rejecting the very program which, by their own recollection, suited them best—and all because they were snookered by the prevailing winds of propaganda. Rather than choosing to repeat their previous success, they became enthralled with the naked emperor's clothes.

At first I was angry with my former patients. but now that I've observed this reaction a number of times, I'm angry with the society that creates this No Win Situation.

What I've just told you about is cognitive dissonance—the inability to believe what you've been programmed not to believe, however compelling the evidence. I imagine many of you have it, too, so I must deal with it before it defeats you.

Let us start with the main area of cognitive dissonance. People believe that the Atkins diet is bad for the heart. They believe it with such certainty that any attempt to demonstrate that the facts show otherwise is met with a smile of incredulity.

And Yet, With a Low-Carbohydrate Diet, Found the Beginning of an Answer

I'm a cardiologist by training, and I've spent a lot of my life treating cardiac patients. Naturally, it has always been deeply satisfying to me that the Atkins diet is so remarkably heart-healthy. Almost from the first moment that I began using it more than twenty-five years ago, I saw the good effects it had on my patients.

Patients with chest pain found their angina clearing up, often within days of going on the diet. Patients with episodes of cardiac arrhythmias maintained a normal rhythm as long as they kept to the diet. Patients with hypertension lowered their blood pressure—and fast.

I'll bet that's not what you've heard. You've had the opposite message drummed into your head so repetitively that I'm afraid you think I'm lying to you. You know with more certainty than you know the sun rises in the east and sets in the west that a diet allowing cream and butter and red meat causes heart attacks and that it' 11 make your heart symptoms worse.

So let's talk about the preconceptions you may have formed, ideas that could quite possibly lead to your being touted off a diet that may fit you as well as Cinderella's slipper fit her.

I'll start with a rhetorical question: How could the Atkins Center have shown a steady 25-year growth pattern into the significant clinical facility it now is if I had treated my patients with a diet that in any way jeopardized their health'?

No, the facts are quite the opposite, and what may come as a surprise to many of you, the rationale and the all-important bottom-line observations are all documented in the doctor's ongoing bible, the widely disseminated medical journals, which we in the field refer to as "peer-reviewed".

What is Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS)?

CFS is an overwhelming feeling of physical and mental exhaustion, and it’s often made worse by exertion. The symptoms are not usually relieved by rest or sleeping.

Chronic fatigue syndrome is also known as myalgic encephalomyelitis (ME) or post-viral fatigue syndrome (PVFS), and it’s only clinically diagnosed after six months of suffering from the disorder.

The cause of CFS is unknown but it is believed to be related to the central nervous system and immune system.

Cancer: The Facts

One person in three will develop cancer during their life.
It can strike at any time, but cancer tends to affect older people more.

Excluding certain skin cancers, there were more than 270,000 new cases of the disease in 2001 - and the rate is increasing by about 1 percent per year.

Some cancers, such as breast, are becoming more common, while new cases of lung cancer fall away due to the drop in the number of smokers; expecially mature smokers

However, while the overall number of new cancer cases is not falling, the good news is that successful treatment rates for many of the most common types are improving rapidly.

BBC News Online has produced, in conjunction with Cancer Research UK, a guide to some of the most common forms of cancer and the treatments used to tackle them.

According to the BBC Health News website.
