What is Crohn’s Disease?

Crohn’s disease is an inflammatory disease of the small intestine, but can affect any part of the gut from the anus to the mouth. It usually occurs in the lower part of the intestine called the ileum.

The inflammation usually leads to ulcerations – breaks in the gut lining. Symptom can include chronic diarrhoea, sometimes blood in stool, abdominal pain, weight-loss, and others. Studies suggest it affects men and women equally.

Crohn’s is named after the physician who first diagnosed and described the disease.
